I was always so concerned
With what others thought
That I forgot
About myself.
What a shame that was!
I was always so restricted
With how I conducted myself
That I forgot
About breathing.
What a shame that was!
I was always trying to be one
With the person I should be
That I forgot
About who I was.
What a shame that was!
But now I don’t care.
But now it doesn’t matter.
But now it’s okay.
I say to myself aloud,
Like no one’s looking.
So now I dance it out.
So now I cry with tears.
So now I speak up.
I allow myself,
Like no one’s looking.
It doesn’t matter if I’m happy,
It doesn’t matter if I’m sad,
It doesn’t matter if neither.
I live each day,
Like no one’s looking.
They can stare till they’re blind.
They can speak till they’re dumb.
They can throw stones till they’re numb.
I go on,
Like no one’s looking.
For this is my only life,
For this is my only chance,
For this is all I’ve got.
So I owe it to myself and only myself,
Like no one’s looking.
yes! Iβm thinking Karma Police, now, by Radiohead: βFor a minute there I lost myself, I lost myself.β

I agree with you on everything except that one doesn’t owe to oneself only. On the contrary, I believe one owes to one’s family, kith & kin and to society, too. But having said that, yes…to oneself first. Thanks for the nice introspecting poem.

As for the owing it to others too, let’s agree to disagree here. π For in my opinion, it’s the pressure of over-thinking about others that makes people live less like themselves. And if someone really loves us, what would hurt them the most is to know that we are hurting just to make them happy. π

Awesome blog post Mia. This poem is a reflection of life and why it is key to focus on your life because you only live once and it is imperative to take care of yourself and do things without listening to what other people say. Just live your life like no one is watching and pray to God for courage and strengthππ
