When a hand is in need,
It stretches out,
It stretches up,
Empty.
The hand is like a prayer,
Full of desperation,
Full of need,
Waiting.
Till another appears,
Equally empty-handed,
But enough
To grab onto.
It is not strength
That pulls up the other.
It is the heart
That matters.
As these helping hands
We rely on,
May we too become
Someone’s helping hands.
Here in Brazil, and perhaps all over the world, we use the expression โnobody lets go of anyoneโs handโ, which means being there whenever necessary. My hug, Mia.

Indeed, that is a really nice expression, Fernando!
I would like to know how you found my book. Would you help me with that? ๐

Mia, I don’t read texts from books, for example, because I don’t speak, read or write in English. It’s easier on the blog, I use Google Translate and it makes things easier. I can, however, say that the texts I’ve read by you are all well written, with aesthetic rigor and content. I really like them. Keep writing. Hugs!

It is a simple poem in its form, but huge in its message. It speaks to us of the power of empathy and how the act of helping is not a demonstration of superiority, but a reflection of our shared humanity. An invitation to give, to hold, and to not forget that once upon a time we also were – or will be – that hand stretching towards the sky, waiting.

What we perceive as good in helping is not helping others but helping oneself. For someone who sees not herself but only the other, does not posses herself, does only please others and does not satisfy her own nature.
